Community Organisations

The Defence Force Welfare Association (DFWA) and the Superannuated Commonwealth Officers Association (SCOA) are currently appealing to the Australian government for a more just and equitable indexation of pensions. Currently the government is maintaining its stance that indexing pensions to the CPI is the best option.

A.C.T. Now! Conference – Democracy in Action PDF Print E-mail

A.C.T. Now! , the inaugural community forum hosted by the Community Alliance Party, has raised the bar for local political parties that claim to listen to the community. In order to formulate well-justified, evidence-based policies across the broad spectrum of issues that shape our life in the A.C.T. we must take democratic engagement with the community to a new level.

“What an indictment to find that so many of our local experts and peak bodies have never been consulted by any other political party in the formulation of their policies, or by the Government to inform their decision making”, says Jane Tullis, President of the Community Alliance Party. “No wonder legitimacy for many of our A.C.T. Government’s decisions is lacking. Without the wisdom and humility to seek advice from those who have dedicated their working and voluntary lives to the Canberra community, but choosing instead to rely on ‘yes men’ and over-paid ‘consultants’, any government will lose its way.”

Saturday’s successful A.C.T. Now! Conference demonstrated the effectiveness of holding open forums to expand the arena for public debate on the governance of our territory. With speakers of the calibre of Malcolm Mackerras, Jack Kershaw, Trevor Cobbold, Don Allan, Jenny Stewart, and Mike Crowther, to name but a few, the Conference identified a wide range of problems confronting the A.C.T. community, including the justice system, education, budget, energy, population growth, waste management, tourism, transport, the voting system, and many more. In a concluding session on ‘the Way Forward’, discussion centred on the concept of ‘community rights’ as a potential solution to many of these challenges.

In October 2012, the CAP will be contesting the next ACT election. As a small and still relatively unknown party we intend to take the initiative and challenge the current Government (and all members of the Legislative Assembly) to listen to the views of our community that are all too often ignored.

Conference on July 2nd PDF Print E-mail

Dear CAP Member,

What do you think of the state of ACT politics now that Chief Minister Jon Stanhope has passed the baton to Katie Gallagher? We thought it was a good time to reflect on what is wrong (and what is right) about the way Canberra is governed today. Consequently, we have decided to host an innovative and exciting one-day Conference to explore current issues in ACT governance from a wide variety of perspectives.

An impressive list of speakers have agreed to address a range of topical ACT issues, including: the ACT-Federal Government relationship; maintaining the quality of ACT schools; the role of the ACT media; Community Health Centres; the role of Community Councils; the Revolve case, and, of course, government accountability. We have asked speakers, wherever possible, to incorporate concrete suggestions to improve the existing situation. The draft program includes such notable contributors as Jack Waterford (Editor-at-large, The Canberra Times), Professor Jenny Stewart (Chair, Woden Valley Community Council), Trevor Cobbold (Chair, Save Our Schools), Jenny Goldie (former president, Sustainable Population Australia), and our own founding president, Ric Hingee. Further speakers are being recruited as I write. An updated program will be distributed just before the Conference.

The structure of the Conference is quite straightforward. After a keynote address on the subject of the ACT-Federal Government relationship, the day will be divided into three thematic sessions: Governance; Infrastructure, and Services. During each 90-minute session, three or four speakers will each deliver a 10~15 minute talk, followed by ample opportunity for questions and answers. The day will conclude with a lively general discussion on the way forward.

The Conference will be held on Saturday 2 July from 9:20 to 4:00. The venue is Havelock House on Northbourne Avenue. A free lunch and light refreshments will be provided. Ample free parking is available near the venue, numerous bus routes pass the front door, and it is within walking distance of Civic. However, seating is strictly limited and since the Conference is open to members of the general public and media, reservations are strongly recommended. To reserve a seat (for the whole day or just a session) please contact the conference chair by email at:  CLOAKING

We look forward to hearing from you shortly.

Kind regards,
Chris Braddick (Vice-President)

The Canberra Hospital Car Park Planning Folly PDF Print E-mail

Around 60 people attended the meeting, convened by the Community Alliance Party in association with representatives from the Mental Health Carers Network, that was held on 15th August at the Hughes Community Centre, to discuss the car park development.

The meeting heard how this project is another example of the flawed planning process in the ACT.  It had been “called in” to overcome allegedly frivolous objections.  Several speakers were able to show that the objections are by no means frivolous and that lower-cost, lower impact and more attractive options exist to ease the traffic problems at the Canberra Hospital.

The Community Alliance Party will be one year old on 12 June, the anniversary of its formal registration as a political party in the ACT.

Although it did not gain a seat in the 2008 ACT elections, the Community Alliance continues to see itself as a viable political force in the ACT with the role of a sentinel concerning policies and activities of the political parties in the ACT Assembly.
