The Community Alliance party has welcomed today’s announcement that a formal environmental impact assessment (EIS) is required for the data centre project at Tuggeranong.

According to James Sizer, candidate for Brindabella, this is a good decision, although it should have been made much earlier.

"The Community Alliance has always stood for good, open and transparent process, and we welcome the first signs that this government might be embarking on such a path in relation to this project," he said.

"It would have been much better if the government had been upfront with the community from the start, letting them know about the proposal before making a decision," he said.

The Community Alliance will revive local planning and advisory committees to broaden community input into the direction of ACT urban planning and development.

"It is the Community Alliance’s policy that communities should be consulted before major decisions are made. In this case, it would have identified the significant community concerns beforehand," said Mr Sizer.

"Even with this government, something as simple as a mailbox drop in potentially affected suburbs, or more open access to Freedom of Information documents, could have given communities some faith that the government has nothing to hide."

"Our only concern now is that due process is now allowed to run its course, and that feedback on the EIS will be taken into genuine account in any final decision."
