The Stanhope Labor Government has blood on its hands over the untimely death of a 15-year-old girl in Lanyon on Saturday, according to Community Alliance Party candidate in Brindabella, James Sizer.

"Tragically, this young girl might still be alive if the Government had kept to its 2004 election promise to duplicate the section of Tharwa Drive on which the head-on accident occurred," Mr Sizer said. "Labor’s broken promises have cost communities their schools, facilities, health and community services, but this one has cost a family far too much."

As a local resident, Mr Sizer knows the frustration of waiting for the busiest road in the area to be brought up to standard. "Like most residents of this area, I travel that stretch of road daily and realise it could so easily have been a member of my family caught up in the accident. My heart goes out to all concerned."

"It should have been duplicated years ago. It is only now that another election is looming that the same promise is being made, but no work has commenced."

"I am sure that the residents of Lanyon would have been much happier to have had our road fixed years ago rather than relying on more promises of future expenditure from the massive surplus that has been saved up to be used as an electioneering war-chest," he said.

"Along with others who live here, I am furious that the ACT Government neglect of the Lanyon Valley has taken a life, when commonsense government would have prevented it," said Mr Sizer. "It’s an indictment on the Minister responsible who has again let down the Brindabella electorate he is supposed to represent."

"The outskirts of Canberra seem to have been forgotten by the ACT Government. Its focus on Civic has cost residents dearly, and failed to do the basics of what is needed. This is not a track record to be proud of."

Unlike this government, the Community Alliance will focus on things that matter to the community, like the basics of 'Roads, Rates and Rubbish'.
