The Community Alliance Party continues to set new standards for community participation and consultation with a second successful policy conference held at Havelock House yesterday (Sunday 10 August). "While other parties are making promises and talking about consultation, the Community Alliance continues to lead by example, getting ACT residents' thoughts and ideas on policy development," according to Party President, Ric Hingee. "It is so refreshing to see so many Canberrans taking part in this better way for ACT politics – from the ground-up." Consultation and good governance were common themes at the conference that featured lively debate in policy areas including health and welfare, education, environment, economy, public safety and leisure. Following the community input, policy positions adopted by the Community Alliance will include: - reviewing government consultation processes and measures to ensure that they are genuine, open and transparent
- better using government resources through a review of consultancies and assessing when it is cost-effective to use consultants and when it is better to use internal ACT public service resources
- developing a co-operative regional approach with neighbouring communities to share costs in areas of common interest (including tourism promotion, national parks, water infrastructure, transport, hospitals and others) to avoid the unnecessary duplication of effort
- boosting public education programs on waste minimisation, and promoting a 'No Waste Week'
- facilitating positive interaction and skill sharing between young and elderly residents of the ACT including cross-generational programs in schools and in the wider community
- requiring public consultation for public art, both for the selection of works and their location.
