Making Civic safer is one way to encourage better business development in the area, according to Community Alliance Party candidate for Molonglo Norvan Vogt, particularly given the spate of burglaries in Garema Place during the past few weeks. When asked this could be achieved, Mr Vogt said Canberra now has the status of a regional centre. The Community Alliance is keen to progress a Civic Master Plan for ensuring that developments proceed in accordance with this status and make the area safer. As part of the Legislative Assembly, the Community Alliance Party would discuss with the ACT Chamber of Commerce how to best to achieve this, rather than imposing a predetermined plan. "The Assembly could play a critical role as a facilitator and a negotiator in the planned expansion of commercial opportunities and such developments that follow," said Mr Vogt. The Assembly could encourage more appropriate development by working cooperatively with Civic's small-business owners when planning for larger, commercial buildings. According to Mr Vogt, "We need to include in planning decisions the needs of all stakeholders – including local businesses looking for investment opportunities and government departments – to create a workable long-term plan and get moving on shaping Civic in a way that brings life and not just more buildings and crime to the area."
