The announcement that the Tharwa Bridge is, at long last, being reopened was welcomed today by Tharwa's unofficial mayor, Val Jeffery.

However, Mr Jeffery said, "We're all utterly disgusted that it has taken three years of mismanagement and lies to get to this stage."

"After three years waiting, it has taken only five months to get the work done and this could have, and should have, happened three years ago," Mr Jeffery said.

"While the government has delayed, two lives have been lost and there have been multiple serious injuries on the mongrel dangerous detour needlessly imposed on the community."

Lives and livelihoods have suffered in a community still reeling from the effects of the disastrous bush fires, according to Mr Jeffery.

"The Tharwa Bridge saga is a sad and disgusting chapter of mismanagement in Canberra's history, so serious that it should be the subject of a public inquiry," Mr Jeffery said.

Mr Jeffery added that he would like to thank the contractors who have done a tremendous job in such a short time.
