More General Practioners (GPs) would be enticed into Canberra’s workforce under the Community Alliance Party's three-pronged plan to address Canberra’s longstanding GP crisis, according to candidate for Ginninderra, Roger Nicoll.

"The Community Alliance Party offers practical solutions to Canberra’s GP crisis rather than the promises that follow years of inaction," Mr Nicoll said.

"Our plan to recover the GP workforce includes three strategies to increase our active GP workforce, attract and retain more medical students and graduates, and attract and retain suitable GPs form area and countries of GP workforce excess," said Mr Nicoll.

This approach includes introducing new and innovative models of primary health care delivery to attract back into the workforce many of the trained GPs who live in Canberra but are working in other professions.

Mr Nicoll says the model is based on community-based clinics and cooperatives with a holistic focus, attractive work conditions and high job satisfaction.

"Working closely with the Federal Government to attract more GP training places to the ANU Medical School and then do more to keep graduates from the school in Canberra is also part of the policy position," he said. "Part of this will be ensuring there are attractive models of primary health care delivery available."

"If we still need more GPs, we will look to other parts of Australia and other developed countries that have GPs in excess and attract them to Canberra," said Mr Nicoll.

According to Mr Nicoll, this will not be an expensive 'Live in Canberra' campaign, but a targeted approach based on promoting work and lifestyle opportunities.
