The highest legislative priority for The Community Alliance Party is to fix or abolish two bad laws.

These bad pieces of legislation have allowed ACT Labor to squeeze yet more money out of ACT ratepayers, while restricting access to information about how the ACT Government is spending ratepayers money.

James Sizer, Community Alliance Candidate for Brindabella announced today the priorities for the Party in the event that candidates are elected to the ACT Legislative Assembly in October.

"Our highest priority would be to fix or get rid of two particularly offensive pieces of legislation that we consider damaging to ACT Communities. Which Act we start with would be determined once the makeup of the assembly is known." Mr Sizer said today.

"We will start with legislation we know will have a smooth passage as it is supported by other parties. We have had strong feedback from the public on the importance of getting the work done in the Assembly, rather than point-scoring. We seek to work with all parties within the Assembly because we support good policy, regardless of its source."

The legislation in question are listed below:

  1. The Unit Titles Amendments Act 2008. This is a law that treats owners and tenants of unit unfairly; the unfair amendments will be abolished.
  2. The Freedom Of Information Act. This allows the use of conclusive certificates, giving public (or should that be political?) servants the power to withhold documents from the public for political reasons. This Act would be amended to strictly limit and define the use of conclusive certificates.

Mr Sizer also says, "In addition, we will look at some of the more inequitable taxes, starting with removing the Fire and Emergency Services Levy from the Rates Act. It was introduced on the basis of an alleged fiscal need that clearly no longer exists."

"Creating or changing legislation is the bread and butter of government work. It's not very sexy, but it is the most critical function of our elected representatives. They are called Legislators because they create legislation."

"The Community Alliance takes this role very seriously. Bad legislation like the Acts we intend to change have a destructive effect on communities, while good legislation simply allows everyone to get on with their lives. We're not after glamour or constant media attention – we're just interested in doing a good job for the people of Canberra."
