A Stanhope-Greens coalition would return unaccountable majority government to the Legislative Assembly, says James Sizer, Brindabella candidate for the Community Alliance Party.

"The Greens have stated their demand for a Ministerial position, which is a position in Cabinet, but they have not said how they will deal with issues around Cabinet solidarity, " says Mr Sizer.

"While a Stanhope-Greens coalition is likely according to the Canberra Times, the same issues would arise with a Seselja-Greens coalition," he said.

The sort of questions Mr Sizer wants to hear answers to are:

  • What happens when the Chief Minister (whoever it is) decides to close more schools, build a power station, or push ahead with the Molonglo development in its current, unsustainable form?
  • When the Chief Minister is censured for misleading or unacceptable behaviour the Assembly, who will they support? On their record, they will vote with the government?
  • What will they do when the Planning Minister uses his call-in powers or refuses to require an environmental impact statement on controversial or environmentally sensitive developments?

"You can ask the Resident's Rally or even the National Party – the price of coalition is very high and the Greens have not told us what they are prepared to pay," said Mr Sizer.

The Community Alliance Party will not form coalition with any party. We will support sensible, good policy that supports and builds communities; and we will demand open, transparent and accountable government," he said.

"We want to hear how the Greens will introduce improved accountability if they are constrained by Cabinet solidarity; other than their excitement at the possibility of a Ministerial position, they have said nothing."
