The Community Alliance has called on Jon Stanhope to admit he went too far on school closures.

Roger Nicoll says that the Community Alliance, the Greens, the Motorists Party, Mark Parton and the Liberals have all now condemned the 2006 school closures debacle.

Four of these have all unequivocally promised to open the schools that should never have been closed, with the Greens promising a review.

"Labor is now the only significant player who maintains that its gutting of the public education system was the right thing to do," said Mr Nicoll.

Despite 20,000 pages of Freedom of Information and other documents, no rational basis for the selection of one school over another has been discovered," he said.

"Schools are part of a community’s identity: you don’t go closing them in the adversarial and mean-spirited way the Stanhope Government did," said Mr Nicoll.

"Even if some schools ‘had’ to close, it is actually impossible to find a justification amidst all the government misinformation and secrecy that characterised the process,” he said.

The entire program was a woeful debacle from start to finish, and it is time for Labor to not only admit it made mistakes, but to reverse the worst of them.
