The Community Alliance Party is committed to working with energy providers, communities, businesses, and governments to progress towards a sustainable basis for energy use in the ACT.

The ACT Government does not have an energy policy. This means that there is currently no comprehensive strategy for addressing energy use, costs or security of supply across the ACT. Although the ACT does not generate its own energy, its plans to do so will increase the government’s responsibilities in this area.

Planning

  • The Alliance will genuinely consult with communities and other stakeholders to develop an energy policy for the ACT that is based in the context of a long-term strategic plan.
  • The Alliance supports the development of an integrated transport network in the ACT that reduces total transport energy use and the reliance on fossil fuels.
  • The Alliance is opposed to nuclear power generation in the ACT.

Supply and use

  • The Alliance supports moves to alternative energy sources – such as solar and wind power – that are less polluting than traditional sources of energy.
  • The Alliance believes that the ACT Government should lead the way in the transition to alternative energy.
  • The Alliance supports investment in local business to help strengthen the ACT economy by developing renewable energy sources.
  • The Alliance supports a solar feed-in tariff for privately generated electricity, and investigation into the feasibility of extending the scheme to commercial buildings.

Efficiency measures

  • It is the Alliance’s view that all new public housing and government facilities should be constructed to minimise energy use; existing public housing stock should be progressively retro-fitted to maximise energy efficiency, and fuel-efficient vehicles should be purchased for government use.
  • The Alliance supports an improved energy efficiency rating system for all residential and commercial buildings.

Emissions

  • The Alliance supports mandatory reporting of emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants associated with energy use.
  • The Alliance supports the ACT Government taking an appropriate role in a national carbon-trading scheme.

Administration

  • The Alliance supports measures to keep the price of energy affordable for low-income households.
  • The Alliance supports a free energy advisory service for users and the construction industry.
  • The Alliance will instigate a review of electricity and water supply in the ACT.
