Get on Track

Why are we campaigning for light rail and against a busway? Light rail is reliable - we can see where it has come from and where it is going. The route can't just be changed like a bus route can. This reliability is very important. People who rely on public transportation choose to live close to stations, and know that the stop won't just move, or the trip expand to take in more suburbs on the way to work. Businesses are also drawn to light rail as they know people will be using the stops, which adds to the vitality of the suburbs, and decreases pressure to develop outwards into the bush. Light rail emits less pollution than cars and buses, particularly in the ACT where we use 23% greenpower. People prefer to catch light rail - it is three to four times better serviced than public buses. Railway tracks can't just be changed back into another traffic lane if the next government decides to cut support for public transport over car use. Buses are very important in getting people from their homes to the light rail station, but Canberra was originally designed for light rail. It's time to finally get on track.

The community's voice has never been more important to demand strong, urgent action from our government and justice for developing nations affected by global warming.

Karma for Molonglo ...healthy woodlands, healthy river, healthy living...

The Commonwealth and ACT Governments have commenced the process of undertaking a strategic assessment of the impacts of the Molonglo development on Matters of National Environmental Significance, as allowed for under the Commonwealth’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

The Conservation Council recently submitted comments on the Draft Terms of Reference for the Molonglo Strategic Assessment.  For a copy of our submission is click here

For more on Molonglo click

The ACT Government responded by removing the whole of Central Molonglo from the DV and indicating that they would implement the rest of the Committee’s recommendations if re-elected to government.  But as we know, in politics, nothing is safe until it’s sure.  So we need to keep the pressure on the new ACT Government after the election to ensure a sustainable outcome for the Molonglo urban development.
