Sports Medicine Australia has moved to make sport safer for young Australians with the launch yesterday by the ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation, Andrew Barr, of the ACT contribution to a national sports injury prevention program.
Statistics have shown one million sports injuries occur each year, which suggests one in 17 Australians suffer an injury, with popular sports such as Australian football recording over 3,944 hospitals admissions yearly*.
Canberra Capitals and Opals star Tully Bevilaqua claimed the 25th ClubsACT Sportstar of the Year last night in front of over 330 athletes, officials, volunteers and members of the ACT Sports Industry at the National Convention Centre Canberra. Bevilaqua pipped Swimmer Adam Pine to claim the annual award.

Voting for the 2008 Sportstar Winners was the tightest in years given the number of excellent performances by ACT athletes and coaches.
ACTSport has announced the finalists in the 7 main categories as well as Chris Timpson from ACT Paralympics Council as the winner of the Southern Cross Volunteer Award and the Queanbeyan Whites Rugby Union Club as the inaugural winners of the ACT Community Sport Award along with Ben Williams from Capital Football as the ACT Sports Official winner.
Winners
Caroline came first in the elite womens National round three mountain bike 4X held at Illinbah QLDl. After this win Caroline retains the series leader plate. Caroline also placed 3rd in elite women National round two of mountain bike downhill aslo at Illinbah. Conditions were extremes of heat, downpours, lightening and plenty of mud, taking their toll on all riders with many falls and injuries. Caroline placed 3rd in the downhill as the 1st Australian behind 2 Canadian girls.
