The Truth - What Stanhope Really Knew About the Tuggeranong Power Station

At the request of the ABC we have temporarily removed our video, while we seek permission to use the ABC's footage of the news bulletin.

The footage is of the claim by Chief Minister (Jon Stanhope) that the power station was down-scaled due to community concern and the proponents being good corporate citizens and blaming the community for the loss of $1bn of investment in the territory.

The reality is that he signed a brief (7 February 2008) BEFORE the plans were filed (27 March 2008) acknowledging that it was not economically viable in its larger form and this was later confirmed by Michael Costello, CEO of ActewAGL.

Why are we concerned?

A consortium led by ActewAGL is seeking to build data storage warehouses supported by a polluting 45MW (MegaWatt) fossil-fuel gas-fired power station (comprising 24/7 x 3 jet turbines) on Broadacre land in a rural buffer zone next to homes in the Tuggeranong Valley, Canberra

The power station will impact the environment and affect the health of thousands of Canberrans

The site was advertised in the media as being in Hume, but isn't - it's in the district of Tuggeranong, within 1km of residential suburbs in Southern Canberra

The project appears to be more about profits than it is about benefit to the people of Canberra

Lack of transparency and accountability - the public has been mislead, misinformed and has not been consulted.

CPR talks with political candidates

In an effort to ensure that the data centres and gas-fired power station are NOT developed on the current proposed site, we have gained support from CAP (Community Alliance Party) and the ACT Liberals.

CAP, Greens & Liberal parties recently attended CPR weekly meetings to state their position with respect to the development.

How many jobs will be created by the data centre or the new power station?

Data centres do not need many people to run them. Power Stations are all automated.

The maximum number of jobs during construction could be 100-150 and at the meeting on Monday 28 April, the ActewAGL spokesman admitted employment would be minimal with an estimate of about 5 - 50 people at the most.

The hundreds of car parking spaces set aside in the plan, are apparently for, again according to Carston Larson the ActewAGL project manager “if there is a disaster”. He was, we believe, referring to a disaster off site and presumably he would then expect hundreds of people to flood into the data centre to protect their data ruined from off site.

We find this difficult to believe as other data centres do not hold that many car parking spaces and we do not see the purpose of concreting and maintaining a car park of this considerable size for the rare chance that people will need to access the data centre all at the same time.

We believe the car parking spaces may be allocated now and will be used later to expand the Power Station size and increase the profit for ActewAGL.

- The vast majority of this $1 billion construction could be given to an out of state construction company (big enough to handle it).
- The gas is from out of state.
- The power is no longer part of a "state significant" project.
- The profit will go into a private company.
- The power station and data centre will employ minimal people.
